Why warehouse cleanliness matters

Cleanliness matters. It may not be one of the KPIs you report on every week, but cleanliness most definitely impacts them. Here are the top 5 why.

Here are the top 5 reasons:

  1. Protect your employees’ health and safety
Without a doubt, workers’ health and safety are the number one reason for cleaning.

In 2022, there was an increase of 4.5% and 2.3 million non-fatal workplace injuries. 450,540 of those were caused by slips, trips, and falls.

Most of these injuries are caused by wet spills, such as excess water, greasy and oily patches, or debris on the floor. However, many can be prevented by efficient floor cleaning.

Airborne dust, such as dust from cardboard boxes, wood crates, and pallets, is another safety and health hazard. When workers inhale it, it can cause occupational lung diseases like asthma, allergies, and respiratory problems.

In facilities with strict hygiene requirements, dust can be a source of cross-contamination. If the dust is combustible, it can also cause a catastrophic explosion.

  2. Boost worker productivity
Make way. It’s really that simple. If your pickers must hop over debris or avoid spills, they won’t be as efficient as they can be. Many little things add up to a lot, right? A lot of lost time and opportunity over weeks, months, and years. Of course, the worst-case scenario is missing a deadline because a picking assignment took longer than expected.

Cleanliness not only boosts productivity but also boosts workers’ morale nudging everyone to give a damn about their workplace and thereby heighten productivity.

  3. Protect product quality
Dust and grime can compromise product quality. Especially sensitive to this, are facilities like food storage warehouses and electronics distribution centers. Lack of cleanliness can cause recalls or if your customers receive a low-quality product, they may even find another supplier. Not on your watch, right?

  4. Make a great impression
You may not have customers visiting every day, but when you do, they’ll most likely make a snap judgment about the quality of your products based on the cleanliness of your facility. Wouldn’t you? Cleanliness simply makes a great impression (also, remember what a clean and tidy environment does for workers’ productivity and morale).

  5. Lower maintenance costs and increase the value of your building
It may be pointing out the obvious. Nevertheless, here goes: Take good care of your floors. Cleaning will prevent eventual damage from dirt, oil, and grime and will extend the life of your flooring, so you need less maintenance in the long run. Furthermore, clean floors will keep gear like forklifts clean and operating at peak performance. Of course, the overall payoff is lower maintenance costs and an increased value of your building.
